Tips & Tricks to determine Authenticity of Blue Sapphire

Suppose you are a Sapphire lover and are eternally confused about whether the stone you buy is genuine and authentic. In that case, this blog is for you.

There are several ways to determine if a blue sapphire is genuine. Here are some tips:

Look for flaws and inclusions

Usually, created Sapphire will come without any inclusions or flaws. One of the ways to determine if the Saphhire is authentic is to use a jeweller’s 10x magnifying glass to inspect the Sapphire closely for inclusions and flaws.

Natural sapphires have tiny bits of other matter, so look for small specks and blemishes on or inside the stone. These flaws are a good indication that a sapphire is real.

The breath test

Breathe on the surface of Saphhire to fog it up, and count how long it takes for the fog to fade and how long it takes until the fog disappears.

Natural sapphires clear up in just under one or two seconds, but created sapphires could take close to five seconds to clear up.

Certify your Sapphire

Gemologists are trained to examine a sapphire with refractometers to determine what kind of gem it is. They generate a report on the analysis of the genuineness of the stones.

After assessing the stones, they determine if the gemstone is natural or synthetic, treated or not, as well as many other attributes. Ask for a complete report from the gemologists.

Check for air bubbles

Lab-created sapphires are put through a process similar to the one that forms natural sapphires. After they form, tiny air bubbles remain in them because they are made of glass. If you see any bubbles inside of the Sapphire, then it is not real.

Ask your jeweller about the sapphires you are buying

Always ask jewellers about the sapphires they are selling to find out what type of gem it is and, the source of the mine, and other details. If the gemstone is genuine, the jeweller can answer these questions confidently.

I hope these tips help you determine if your blue Sapphire is genuine.

While determining the authenticity of the Blue Sapphire is extremely important, here are some additional tips and tricks to help you make an informed purchase:

 blue sapphire

Determine the type of blue Sapphire you want

Blue sapphires come in different shades and hues. The most popular shade is a strong, vivid, velvety blue to violet-blue in medium to medium-dark tones. You can also choose from a range of hues, from pale baby blue to royal blue. It’s important to decide what shade of blue you prefer before purchasing.

Look for exceptional color

The colour of a sapphire is what shade it is. The key factor in colour value is its saturation, essentially how pure or intense the colour seems. For most sapphires, the higher the level of saturation, the better.

Check for clarity

Most sapphires will have some inclusions, but you want to look for a sapphire without minimal inclusions visible to the naked eye. Experts mostly look at the size, position, and number of inclusions to determine the clarity. Blue Sapphires with less visible inclusions are considered to be higher in grade.

Consider the cut

The cut of a stone is nothing but the quality of faceting and polishing the stone from the rough. Factors such as symmetry, windowing, extinction, and brilliance determine the stone’s cut. A well-cut sapphire will sparkle more and reflect light better.

Check the carat weight

Like other gemstones, a sapphire is weighed in carats. Typically, larger stones are harder to find, so they tend to be valued higher in price.

Ensure authenticity

To ensure a genuine purchase is made, suggest buying from a reputable jeweller who can provide certification that your Blue Sapphire is authentic.

Ask questions

Don’t worry about asking too many questions about the Sapphire you’re interested in buying. A reputable jeweller should be able to provide you with all the information you need.

Set a budget

Blue sapphires can range in price depending on their quality and size. Setting a budget before making a purchase is important so you don’t overspend.

It’s important to consider factors such as colour, clarity, cut, carat weight, authenticity, and budget. By following these tips and tricks, you surely will make an informed purchase that you’ll be happy with for years.
