A Glittering Green Gesture: Mr. Modi’s Lab-Grown Diamond Gift to Jill Biden

In a remarkable display of diplomacy and eco-consciousness, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India presented a 7.5ct green colour lab-grown diamond to First Lady Jill Biden during his state visit to the United States of America.

The green lab-created diamond which was gifted by him on June 22, 2023, was certified by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and is said to be worth over $1 million.

The diamond industry is hailing this gesture by Mr Modi as it is seen as India’s commitment to sustainable practices in the fine jewellery space.

Unlike the natural diamonds that are mined from nature, Lab-grown diamonds are GROWN (yes! You read it correctly) in laboratories. Surprised or shocked?!

Using a similar chemical process that naturally occurs in the earth, lab-grown diamonds are created. They are put through a similar grading chart as natural diamonds.

Lab-created diamonds take less time to produce and are more efficient energy savers. They require relatively less water. All this makes them a sustainable option, one that is loved by many millennials.

India is a major producer of lab-grown diamonds. In 2022, India accounted for over 20% of global production. To promote lab-grown further, the government is extending incentives such as tax breaks and subsidies.

In addition to the environmental benefits of lab-grown diamonds, they are also considered to be conflict-free. This means that they have not been mined in areas where there is conflict or human rights abuses.

Here are some of the benefits of lab-grown diamonds:

  • They are sustainable.
  • They are conflict-free.
  • They are affordable.
  • They are available in a wide variety of colours and sizes.

If you are considering buying a diamond, you may want to consider a lab-grown diamond. They are a beautiful and sustainable option that is gaining popularity.
